MASKING, VAXXING: STILL AN ISSUE?

Just asking…

Is mask-wearing still a matter for debate?

Seems like the wearing of face masks in Hawaii is a no-brainer – science shows it shields you from catching the virus, or spreading it if you’re infected.

Masking/vaxxing: Still an issue?

Sadly, amid rising COVID-19 stats, this mask thing continues to be an issue to discuss.  Seems the delta variant – more devastating, if you catch it — is a major player in the new, mounting wave of COVID deaths.

A local expert predicts that the pandemic will around for two more years. Will the unvaccinated souls be around then? Remember, there’s a segment of folks who say that the right to say no to the shot is a matter of choice; that it shouldn’t be a mandate to wear it under specific circumstance

Getting vaccinated hasn’t yet reached the state’s goal of 70 per cent  (stalled at 60+ per cent) and continues to be a challenge.

So is vaxxing still an issue? Will we ever see the light at the end of the tunnel?

Yes, there’s still resistance, in pockets of the community, where some won’t roll up sleeves to get the free shots for a variety of dubious reasons. Religious beliefs. Personal rights. Nixing the vaxx that Democrats are pushing, even though the GOP got the ball rolling an administration ago.

Among the naysayers, it’s their freedom to be mask-free or unvaxxed.

That’s one of the reasons why Frank DeLima has once more been tapped to non-vaxxers to get that shot.

Further: the lieutenant governor has been contemplating a possible lockdown again – remember those horrid times – as hospitals are running out of patient beds, covid numbers surging.

The bottom line: About 95 per cent of recent COVID deaths are folks who weren’t vaxxed. Consequently, does this make any sense to pass on the shot?

Get one, if you haven’t; it’s protection for you, your family, and others.

EXPRESS YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS

\

Just asking…

How would you describe yourself, in three to five words?

Would you tell it like it is?

Like: Happy, fun, overweight? ? Have to workout more frequently?

Would you lie, make up something?

Like: Getting married soon, need to lose 30 pounds?

Would you embellish, to put out a positive vibe?

Like: Will soon vaccinate? Banning Spam musubi my diet?

WERE YOU A KIDDIE CLUB MEMBER?

Just asking …

Are you old enough to remember Saturday “movie clubs” at your neighbor film theaters?

Kewalo Theatre

Back in the day Consolidated Theatres had matinee “clubs” – named for the likes of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Popeye, etc. – where kids signed on and family fare screened for youths.

Palama Theatre
Kaimuki Theatre

Admission was, if you can believe it, 10 cents.

So the Palama Theatre, the Kalihi Theatre, the Liliha Theatre, the Kailua Theatre, the Pawaa Theatre, the Kaimuki Theatre, the Kapahulu, the Kapahulu Theatre  and the Liberty Theatre had a retinue of clubsters showing up for morning movies on Saturdays.

Liliha Theatre

Some sites had pre-screening talent shows with island keiki performing for prizes.

All screenings had cartoon reels and “news” recaps – part of the ritual of movie-going then – along with coming attractions.

These elements ended when the community theaters started shutting down, triggered by the redevelopment of larger halls of viewing, like the Hawaii, the Kuhio, the Waikiki #3, the Waikiki #1 and #2, and the Cinerama. And yeah – those stand-alone screening halls eventually were replaced by regional multi-plexes, the smaller ones now shutdown because of the pandemic.

For memory’s sake, were you a Saturday matinee clubber? Where?  Share…

HOUSE RULES: BAREFOOT OR SHOES?

Just asking…

Is yours a remove-shoe, remove-slippers

home upon entry?

In other words, what’s your house rule – enter barefoot or with slipper or shoes?

This is largely a local issue; traditionally, islanders don’t wear any kind of feet covering when entering their homes. They also go barefoot when they visit friends.

Would you tell guests to your home to take off footwear at the doorsteps? Why or why not?

HOW MANY STREAKING CHANNELS IS TOO MANY?

Searching for streaming channels.

Just asking…

How many streaming channels is too many?Am I the only one who thinks that there should be a limit to signing up for premium streaming channels? For starters, it’s darn expensive to keep adding streaming resources to the monthly fees.

Bundled with my Spectrum subscriptions are a host of longtime cable channels like HBO, Showtime, Cinemax and lesser sources like A&E, TNT, Hallmark, Lifetime and USA.

My pay-extra streaming channels – five –include Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and HBO Max. That’s five on my plate. Would like to add others like Apple TV, but the costs are prohibitive, so I am limiting and restricting further memberships like Paramount and Discovery+. Every few months, new sources pop up….expect CNN+ soon, for instance. How many are you addicted to in your household?
